Acton Academy Columbus is a private, learner-driven microschool in Dublin, Ohio where the
youngest learners meet the world through their hands, not a tablet. Spark Studio
(ages 4.5–7) is entirely screen-free. Growth Studio (ages 7–9) is deliberately
tech-light: every core academic skill — reading, handwriting, math, discussion —
happens on paper, out loud, with people. Families come to us from across greater
Columbus for exactly this reason.
Central Ohio handed every child a device. Then it took the phones away.
Look around greater Columbus and the direction is unmistakable. District after district
runs a one-to-one device program — Hilliard's
One2One initiative
puts an iPad in the hands of every student and threads it through both school and home
workflows. Neighboring districts run versions of the same model. The reasoning is sound on
its face: equal access, fewer paper costs, readiness for a digital economy.
And yet, at the same moment, Ohio moved sharply the other way on the device children carry
in their own pockets. Under
Ohio Revised Code 3313.753,
every district board had to adopt a policy prohibiting student cell phone use during the
instructional day by January 1, 2026. Principals across the state have reported the same
early results: noisier hallways, more eye contact, longer stretches of focus, less digital
drama. Private schools like ours were never required to comply — most of us had already
decided.
If a phone on the desk fragments a child's attention, what exactly does a tablet on the
desk do? That is the question we sat with. Our answer is this page.
This is not a stand against technology. It is a stand about sequence. There is an
order to how a child should meet the world: hand before keyboard, voice before comment
field, paper before pixel. Get that order right in the early years and the tools become
genuinely powerful later. Get it backwards and you spend years trying to rebuild attention
that was never allowed to form.

Plenty of schools call themselves screen-free and quietly mean "we limit it." So here is the
honest inventory — every place a screen does and does not appear in our two youngest
studios. Read it before you tour, then come check that we're telling the truth.

03 Spark Studio · Ages 4.5–7
Screen-free is not a restriction. It's the whole curriculum.
In early childhood, a screen doesn't just occupy time — it occupies the exact channel a
young brain is trying to build. Between four and seven, a child is wiring fine motor
control, spatial reasoning, expressive language, self-regulation and the ability to hold a
question in mind long enough to answer it. Every one of those is built through resistance:
the weight of a real object, the friction of a pencil, the patience of another human face
waiting for you to finish your sentence.
Screens are frictionless by design. That's their selling point, and in early childhood it's
the problem. So our screen-free preschool and kindergarten environment isn't subtraction —
it's what makes room for a
Montessori, Reggio Emilia and
Waldorf-inspired curriculum that needs hands, materials, mess and time.
What the guidance and the research suggest
We are careful here, because early-childhood screen research is largely observational and
the effect sizes are debated. What we can say is that the direction of the evidence, and of
every major health body's guidance, points the same way.
Health guidance
The World Health Organization's guidance for children under five recommends no more
than one hour of sedentary screen time — "less is better" — and explicitly encourages
reading, storytelling, singing and puzzles with a caregiver in its place.

Pediatric guidance
The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one hour per day of
high-quality programming for children aged two to five, and emphasizes co-viewing and
conversation over solo use.

Brain imaging
In a study of 47 preschoolers, higher screen use was associated with lower measured
integrity of white matter tracts supporting language and emergent literacy. It is
cross-sectional and cannot show cause — but it is a signal worth taking seriously at
the age when those tracts are forming.
Following 2,441 children, researchers found that more screen time at 24 and 36 months
predicted weaker performance on developmental screening at 36 and 60 months — including
communication, motor and problem-solving domains. The effects were modest, and critics
have rightly pressed on their size; the direction has held up.

04 Growth Studio · Ages 7–9
Tech-light, because the medium changes the thinking.
By the time learners reach Growth Studio they can already read.
The work shifts from learning to read toward reading to learn — fluency, vocabulary,
morphology, comprehension depth, written expression. Educational software can drill those.
What it struggles to do is grow them.
We already proved it in math
This isn't a theory we're trying out on your child. Growth Studio math moved off screens
some time ago, toward workbooks, manipulatives and genuinely hard problems. Two things
changed. Learners started representing a concept four different ways — with materials, in a
drawing, in written steps, out loud to a peer — instead of hunting for the answer that made
the progress bar move. And they got tougher. When there is no hint button, "I'm stuck"
stops being the end of the road and becomes the beginning of the actual work.
That resilience is the transferable asset, and it's why we extended the same logic to
literacy.
What we're protecting
Attention stamina. A chapter takes forty minutes of unbroken
concentration. That capacity is built by practice and eroded by task-switching.
Intrinsic motivation. Points, streaks and levels teach a child to work
for the reward rather than the understanding. A 128-experiment meta-analysis found that
tangible extrinsic rewards can measurably undermine intrinsic motivation for the task
itself
(Deci, Koestner & Ryan, 1999).
Tolerance for difficulty. Constant micro-rewards recalibrate a child's
sense of how learning should feel. We want them to expect it to feel hard, and to know
they can do hard.
Language as a social act. Literacy isn't decoding. It's meaning-making,
argument and expression — which require another person.
We're not simply removing a program
Adaptive literacy software has one real strength: spaced repetition. We kept that and
rebuilt it offline. Roots, prefixes and suffixes come back on deliberate revisit cycles,
then get used in reading, in writing and in discussion across subjects — repetition
plus meaning, which is more than the software was ever designed to deliver.

Print vs. screen · meta-analysis
Across a large body of studies, reading comprehension was better on paper than on
screen — and the paper advantage grew over the years the studies span, rather than
shrinking as students became more digitally native.

Notice what's absent from that list: any year spent using a screen as a worksheet. When
technology finally shows up, it shows up as a maker's tool in the hands of a learner who
already knows how to concentrate, read hard things and defend an idea out loud. That
learner is not behind. That learner is dangerous in the best way.

Straight answers.
Is there a screen-free school near Columbus, Ohio?
Yes. Acton Academy Columbus is a private microschool in Dublin, Ohio, about fifteen minutes from Hilliard, Powell, Upper Arlington and Worthington. Our Spark Studio (ages 4.5–7) is fully screen-free — there are no tablets, no apps and no screen-based curriculum in the room. Our Growth Studio (ages 7–9) is deliberately tech-light: all core academic skills are done on paper, by hand, out loud.
Do learners use any technology at all?
Yes, later and on purpose. Technology enters the journey as a tool learners build with rather than a screen they sit in front of. Discovery Studio learners use research, design and publishing tools for real Quests and real businesses. Adventure Studio learners have built and tested machine-learning models. The sequence matters more than the total: hands and voice first, tools second.
What does "tech-light" mean in the Growth Studio?
It means reading, writing, handwriting, morphology, math practice and Socratic discussion happen with no device at all. A screen appears only when it is the right instrument for a specific job — building a slide presentation for a public exhibition, a guided research session, a shared studio video — and it is a shared studio device, never a personal one.
Will my child fall behind on technology skills?
The skill that transfers is not knowing which button to tap. It is attention, reasoning, reading stamina and the confidence to figure out an unfamiliar system. Learners who build those capacities pick up new software in an afternoon. We have watched middle schoolers with a low-tech elementary foundation go on to build and critique their own AI models.
How is this different from a school with a one-to-one iPad program?
Many Central Ohio districts issue a device to every student and integrate it into daily instruction and homework. That model optimizes for access and efficiency. We are optimizing for depth: print reading, handwriting, productive struggle and face-to-face dialogue. Same goal of preparing children for a digital world, opposite starting point.
Is there screen-based homework?
No. There is no homework and no login to complete at night. Time at home is free time at home — reading, building, playing outside, being part of a family.
Which ages does the screen-free approach cover?
Spark Studio, ages 4.5 to 7, is screen-free. Growth Studio, ages 7 to 9, is tech-light for all core skills. Discovery (9–12) and Adventure (12–14) introduce real digital tools progressively, tied to real work with real audiences.
